How to tie an Orange bag
Fast and safe processing
Ensuring that your Orange bag is secured correctly is essential for our team to safely and quickly count your bottles and cans. Avoid double-knotting the drawstrings, as this requires cutting the bag open, making it unusable for future collections. Follow these simple steps to secure your bag properly.
Step 1: Fill your Orange bag correctly
Each bag holds approximately 50 eligible bottles and cans, but this can change depending the size. For smooth processing:
- Bottles and cans should be liquid-free, uncrushed and with the barcode intact.
- Don't overfill bags, and if you've got glass bottles, make sure it's not too heavy.
- Lids should be removed (unless you’re in NSW or VIC, lids can stay on).
Step 2: Secure your bag the right way
Use a can ring tab (preferred method)
Instead of tying a knot, remove a ring tab from one of your cans. Feed the drawstring through the round part of the tab, then pull it tight to secure the bag. This allows our team to quickly open and reuse the bag.
Wrap & tuck method
- Wrap the drawstring once or twice around the top of the bag.
- Tuck the string under one of the loops.
This keeps the bag secure while making it easy to untie, ensuring the bag remains reusable.
Avoid these common mistakes
- Don't double-knot the drawstrings – it makes the bag unusable.
- Don't pull the drawstring too tight – our team wears gloves and cannot undo tight knots.
- Don't leave your bags out in the sun either – the heat and UV will break them down. Keep them under a tarp if you're leaving them outside.
By following these simple guidelines, you’ll help our team process your containers quickly and safely, while also ensuring your Orange Bag can be used again for future collections. Thank you for making recycling easier!
